Leadership Statement
At the Fat Dog Foundation, we believe that true empowerment comes from both knowledge and lived experience. Our mission is rooted in the understanding that every individual, regardless of their past, deserves the opportunity to grow, contribute, and lead with purpose.
Our CEO, Lloyd Cannon, embodies this vision. For much of his young life—and into parts of his adulthood—Lloyd was in and out of incarceration. He was also a former gang member, rising to a leadership role during some of the most difficult times on the streets of Los Angeles. Those years exposed him to the harsh realities of violence, systemic inequities, and the struggles that pull many young people into cycles of crime.
But Lloyd’s story did not end there. In 2015, he made a decisive change in his life, leaving behind the destructive paths of his past and embracing a new direction. That year, he launched and continues to operate a successful tow truck business, proving his determination to build a legitimate and sustainable future. Since then, he has dedicated his life to providing, giving back, and helping others avoid the mistakes he once made.
His lived experience gives him a unique perspective on the challenges that underserved and justice-impacted communities face every day. Far from being a limitation, Lloyd’s background strengthens our foundation’s mission. It allows him to lead with empathy, authenticity, and a deep connection to the people we serve. His leadership is a powerful reminder that second chances are not only possible but can lead to extraordinary contributions to society.
The Fat Dog Foundation was created as part of that mission. Lloyd founded the organization in honor of his longtime friend and family figure, known as Fat Dog, who passed away in 2024. Fat Dog was instrumental in helping to end decades of gang wars on the streets of Los Angeles, using his influence to bring peace where conflict had reigned. Naming the foundation after him keeps his legacy alive—transforming pain into purpose and honoring his role as a peacemaker.
By standing at the intersection of innovation and redemption, the Fat Dog Foundation champions opportunities for those who may feel left behind. Through technology education, financial literacy, workforce development, and mentorship, we empower individuals and families to overcome barriers and build sustainable futures.
We proudly affirm that redemption is not just a belief — it is the foundation of our leadership and the heartbeat of our work.
